How to handle cough and shortness of breath

Patient's question:

Patient Age:
Detailed Condition and Purpose of Consultation: My daughter has been coughing and short of breath recently. She went to the hospital for examination, and the doctor diagnosed her with asthma but could not determine the underlying cause. She received intravenous drips and medication (Mastoid Tablets, Ketotifen Tablets). The treatment is expected to last for three to twelve months. Please advise on what precautions to take in daily life (including diet) and any recommended medications. Thank you very much!

Doctor's answer:

Hello, since asthma is primarily triggered by internal phlegm encountering triggers, in addition to avoiding allergens, it is also important to pay attention to dietary restrictions, especially avoiding sour, salty, sweet, greasy, cold, and seafood. Specific dietary restrictions should be differentiated between cold asthma and heat asthma for selection.
For cold asthma, symptoms include rapid breathing, a rattling sound in the throat, thin and white, frothy sputum, stuffy and oppressive chest, dull complexion with a bluish tinge, lack of thirst or a preference for warm drinks, white and slippery tongue, or accompanied by a headache, chills, fever without sweating. People with cold asthma should eat foods that warm the lungs, dispel cold, resolve phlegm, and promote ventilation, while avoiding cold and refrigerating foods; avoiding salty and greasy foods; avoiding seafood and alcohol.
For heat asthma, symptoms also include rapid breathing and a wheezing sound in the throat, but with thick, yellow, sticky sputum that is difficult to expel, restlessness and discomfort in the chest, flushed face with spontaneous sweating, thirst with a preference for drinking, red tongue with yellow greasy coating, or accompanied by a headache, fever with sweating. People with heat asthma should eat foods that are cooling, clear heat, and resolve phlegm, while avoiding spicy, dry-heat, hot, and fried foods; avoiding sweet, greasy, and rich foods; avoiding seafood and alcohol.
As for the later stage of asthma, when the body's vital Qi is damaged and the lungs, spleen, and kidneys are weak, characterized primarily by shortness of breath, refer to the dietary restrictions for "deficiency asthma" in the relevant chapter.
