Reason for no hearing in the left ear

Patient's question:

Age
Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: A few days ago, it was suddenly discovered that the left ear could not hear. Neurological conduction velocity tests showed severe hearing loss in the left ear (no response wave), while the right ear has normal hearing. MRI findings: No obvious abnormal signals were observed in the bilateral cerebral parenchyma, the midline was central, and no obvious abnormalities were seen in the ventricles, sulci, and fissures. The structures in both bilateral cerebellar pontine angles were clear, and the size and shape of both auditory nerves were normal, with uniform signals and no obvious abnormal signals. Both cochleae were symmetrical, with no obvious abnormalities in morphology and signals. Consultation purpose: To identify the cause and determine how to treat it.

Doctor's answer:

Tinnitus can occur in various diseases, and almost any cause of ear disorders can lead to tinnitus symptoms, but the relationship between tinnitus and hearing is complex. It may be caused by only a small piece of earwax contacting the eardrum, or it may be due to a tumor located on the auditory nerve. Other conditions such as otosclerosis (a disease that occurs in the middle ear's small bones), ototoxic drug poisoning, and noise can also cause varying degrees of tinnitus. Tinnitus manifests in diverse ways: some experience it in one ear, while others have it in both ears; some have intermittent tinnitus, while others have continuous tinnitus. Mild cases may only be noticed during quiet moments, while severe cases can cause discomfort even in a noisy environment. The main causes of tinnitus are ear-related diseases, such as external ear diseases: external ear canal inflammation, earwax blockage, and foreign objects in the ear.
