The Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese Literature are the crystallization of the wisdom of the Chinese nation and also the pearls of Chinese literary history. For hundreds of years, they have been deeply loved by the masses, becoming household names and timeless works that have had a profound impact on Chinese culture. Romance of the Three Kingdoms, also known as Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Complete Version), is its full title. The author, Luo Guanzhong, was a novelist of the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, named Ben, styled Guanzhong, and born in Hangzhou, with ancestors from Taiyuan. This book is one of the most accomplished historical novels in ancient Chinese literature. It was created by the author based on abundant materials such as historical records, anecdotes, and lost stories about the Three Kingdoms. It was refined, enriched, and elevated on the foundation of folk arts such as opera and storytelling. Luo Guanzhong absorbed the nourishment of folk art while verifying historical facts, organizing the chaotic history of the Three Kingdoms in a chronological, event-based, and character-focused manner to write this monumental work. The content of Romance of the Three Kingdoms depicts nearly a century of historical stories from the first year of Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 184) to the first year of Emperor Taikang of the Western Jin Dynasty (AD 280). The book begins by describing the crisis caused by the incompetence and corruption of the ruling class in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, leading to widespread suffering and rebellion, culminating in the peasant uprising led by Zhang Jiao. It then describes Dong Zhuo's cruel and vicious behavior, which provoked the dissatisfaction of other warlords, who united to condemn him. Dong Zhuo was killed, and Cao Cao came to power, holding the emperor hostage to command the warlords, suppressing northern resistance forces, and advancing southward. Sun and Liu formed an alliance to resist Cao, and the Battle of Red Cliffs defeated Cao, establishing the Tripartite. From then on, the three states of Wei, Shu, and Wu engaged in wars with varying outcomes, until the Western Jin conquered Shu, defeated Wei, and, restoring unity. This small book condenses the monumental work with over a million words, extracting its essence while preserving the original style as much as possible—a difficult task. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms for children, accompanied by colorful illustrations, is even more vivid and easier for young readers learning to read to deeply understand the story.
