Cranial Base Surgery Anatomical Atlas

Features: Surgical Anatomy of the Skull Base, the English version of The Skull Base Surgical Anatomy Atlas, is a specialized book written by Associate Professor Tatsuharu Oyama from the Department of Neurosurgery at Osaka City University, with illustrations by Director Motohide Baba from Maoka Hospital, and edited by Professor Akira Ume from the Department of Neurosurgery at Osaka City University. It was translated into Chinese by Xia Hansong, a young neurosurgeon with an M.S. degree who studied in Japan for eight years, and reviewed by Professors Zhang Tianshi and Zhang Xueming, the directors of the Shanghai Neurosurgery Emergency and Rapid Treatment Center. Published by Shanghai Science and Technology Press, this reference book presents anatomical structures and their relationships commonly encountered in six frequently performed surgical approaches in skull base surgery, displayed hierarchically. Starting from the patient's position and skin incision, it gradually progresses to expose the target structures for surgical intervention, followed by skull base reconstruction. The procedures are detailed and comprehensive. The six surgical approaches are: ①Orbital-Maxillary-Middle Temporal Approach; ②Auricular Colliculus Approach; ③Extended Middle Cranial Fossa Approach; ④Anterior Petrous Bone-Tentorial Approach; ⑤Pre-Sigmoid Petrous Bone Approach; ⑥Occipital Colliculus Approach. All illustrations are presented in color, with clear layers and excellent three-dimensional effects, accompanied by textual explanations, making them memorable and easy to understand, effectively achieving the effect of "learning through pictures." This book enables physicians new to skull base surgery to familiarize themselves with the basic content and principles of the field in a relatively short time. China has a history of more than ten years in skull base surgery, and there are already multiple professional books on the topic. However, in terms of content, none are as detailed and standardized as this book, making it a valuable reference. As major medical centers in China hold "Skull Base Surgery Workshops" annually, the publication of this atlas will help enrich teaching materials, thereby improving workshop quality. Skull base surgery is a relatively new and highly challenging discipline, once considered an off-limits surgical area in neurosurgery. Through more than two decades of exploration and development, many effective surgical methods have been summarized. Building on this foundation, this atlas introduces readers to comprehensive skull base anatomy and six commonly used effective surgical approaches through a combination of text and illustrations. It also discusses skull base reconstruction, particularly the preservation of scalp vessels, preoperative planning, and the determination of skin incisions. This atlas can help neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, and head and neck surgeons improve their skull base surgical skills by integrating clinical anatomy.
