Features: This book does not introduce any so-called "magic cure," but rather a simple portrayal of the lifestyle of the residents of Okinawa. The author has done a very meaningful work by sharing the secrets of the health and longevity of the Okinawan people with the world. I deeply respect and congratulate them for this. I hope to learn more about their ongoing research. While reading this book, I was happy to discover that I have already begun to gradually implement the health and longevity secrets of the Okinawan people. In the days to come, I will introduce more of these beneficial lifestyles into my own life.
The basic questions people have about the Okinawan people are primarily centered around two aspects: to what extent is their health and longevity determined by genetics, and to what extent is it influenced by the environment. It is almost impossible to provide a clear answer to this question. However, I believe that genetic factors are not the main reason for their health and longevity. This belief is actually well-founded. A large number of research results on aging by scientists have shown that lifestyle factors (such as regular physical activity and harmonious social activities) play a crucial role in maintaining health and longevity. Additionally, due to the abandonment of traditional lifestyles, the physical health of young people on Okinawa has begun to decline, and the incidence of some common Western diseases among young Okinawans has also increased.
Over the past 40 years, I have visited many places in Japan, but I have only been to Okinawa once. That was in November 1999, when I was in Japan to give a presentation. There, I met some local shamans and healthy elderly people, gaining a general understanding of the local culture (especially the food culture). By chance, I met the authors of this book, and this was my first time learning about their great research project. That brief encounter deeply moved me, and I eagerly looked forward to returning to Okinawa to explore this mysterious island and its people.
My first encounter with the Okinawan people was very special. They were clearly different from Westerners and people from the main island of Japan. They looked different, their culture was different, and the food they ate was also unique. For example, their diet often includes large amounts of bitter melon and turmeric tea. As we delved deeper, we found that the lifestyle of the Okinawan people is not at all strange, and it aligns very well with the research findings of scientists. This includes regular physical activity; a diet primarily based on plant-based foods (including fish, tofu, a variety of vegetables, and moderate fat intake); and social support.
