Diarrhea with green, foamy, and curdled milk in the stool indicates what problem?

Patient's question:

The watery, foamy, and curdled stool has been present daily for 4 to 5 times. The child has been consuming a mixture of milk and rice powder. On January 15th, in the morning, after eating only a small portion of orange, the child began experiencing loose stools. Three days later, the child started developing a low fever, although they continued to eat rice powder daily.

Doctor's answer:

Infants admitted to the pediatric ward often exhibit these symptoms, which are not closely related to eating. They are mostly transmitted by enteroviruses. When nausea and vomiting persist, it is best not to feed regular milk formula. Instead, opt for a lactose-free formula or dilute regular milk formula more than usual. Treating nausea and vomiting requires a process. I don’t know whether your baby is receiving intravenous fluids at the outpatient clinic or is hospitalized. If nausea and vomiting are severe, it is recommended to hospitalize the child, as outpatient fluid replacement is insufficient, and dehydration recovery will be slower. Prompt hospitalization generally requires 7 to 10 days for noticeable improvement, which also depends on the child’s constitution. The key is to provide proper care to prevent catching a cold, fever, and secondary bacterial infections. Simple viral infections are self-limiting once dehydration is corrected.
