Features: Institutional economics is a new discipline that has emerged in the world over the past 30 years. It has immediately attracted great interest from economists worldwide, becoming a popular research field with increasing prestige. Standard neoclassical economics struggles to effectively explain many real-world economic phenomena and issues. Meanwhile, the economic institutional transitions in developing countries, the economic reforms in socialist countries, and the governance and management in newly industrialized countries can all be explained and guided by the theories and methods of institutional economics. We offer institutional economics to master's and doctoral students not only to help them understand the principles of institutional economics but also to enable them to analyze practical issues in economic reforms, openness, and development under the specific conditions of China, as the saying goes, "be a Chinese cat to catch Chinese mice." This is in the spirit of consolidating and promoting the great achievements of more than 20 years of reform and opening up, further improving the socialist market economy system, accelerating the pace of building a moderately prosperous society, and realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The instructors of this course are mostly middle-aged and young economists. We have specially compiled these lecture notes into Institutional Economics and China.
