Hypoxia leading to cerebral palsy, what to do

Patient's question:

My cousin's baby is 2 years old this year, but the child has always looked quite abnormal. Compared to children of the same age, he is developing slower, and he seems a bit slow-witted. Additionally, there are some very unusual behaviors, and his movements appear uncoordinated. When seen by a doctor, they said it couldn't be ruled out that the condition might be caused by oxygen deprivation during birth, leading to cerebral palsy.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, the goal of cerebral palsy treatment is to correct abnormal movements and postures using various comprehensive therapeutic measures, reduce the degree of disability, and promote normal development in children. The principles of treatment are early diagnosis, early intervention, and long-term rehabilitation. The treatment plans include:
1. Rehabilitation Therapy – Assess the existing functional abilities of cerebral palsy children, develop training programs tailored to their characteristics, and provide training facilities.
2. Surgical Orthopedics – Suitable for children whose gait is approaching maturity (6–10 years old). The main indication is spastic cerebral palsy, aiming to correct deformities, improve muscle tone, and enhance limb balance. The surgery includes tendon surgery, nerve surgery, bone and joint surgery, etc.
3. Family Education – Encourage family members to participate in rehabilitation therapy. Parents should be educated on functional training techniques and daily living skills training methods. They should also provide comprehensive care for the child, paying attention to proper nutrition and nursing.
4. Medication – Currently, no specific medication has been found to treat cerebral palsy. Medications are primarily used for symptomatic relief. For example, small doses of Artane can be tried to alleviate hyperkinesis in athetoid cerebral palsy. To relieve muscle spasticity, Baclofen, botulinum toxin A, Dantrolene, and benzodiazepines can be used to reduce muscle tone, increase joint mobility, and improve motor function. Antiepileptic drugs are used for children with epilepsy.
