Is a hand cramp a symptom of epilepsy?

Patient's question:

A two-and-a-half-year-old child has hand spasms in the early morning, around 3-4 a.m. During the spasms, the child clenches both hands very tightly. There are no other accompanying symptoms. Is this a medical condition?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, based on the symptoms you described, it could be epilepsy. Symptoms of epilepsy include dizziness, stomach discomfort, sudden loss of consciousness, falling to the ground, head tilting backward, limbs becoming rigid, rhythmic twitching of the whole body, often biting the tongue, foaming at the mouth, and may be accompanied by incontinence of urine and feces, usually lasting 1-3 minutes. The patient experiences a brief loss of consciousness, most of the time complete loss of consciousness, occasionally mild consciousness impairment, still aware of the surroundings, able to hear questions but unable to answer.
