Is it normal for a newborn to have diarrhea?

Patient's question:

My baby is two and a half months old and has been exclusively breastfed. But recently, something's wrong. After every feeding, she has loose stools shortly afterward. It's usually about five to six times a day. Is this normal? Why is this happening? Please share your experiences if you have any.

Doctor's answer:

Don't worry, breastfed babies usually have more bowel movements than formula-fed babies. Breast milk contains rich oligosaccharides, which can fully stimulate gastrointestinal peristalsis. Most babies will not have hard stools. Breastfeeding usually has more frequent bowel movements in the neonatal period, about 2 to 5 times a day. As the child grows older, the number of bowel movements will gradually decrease. As long as the baby is in good spirits, feeding well, gaining weight normally, and without constipation, abdominal pain, or bloating, it is all normal. Parents have no need to worry.
