How should I deal with a child's stuffy nose at night for a month?

Patient's question:

The child has had a stuffy nose while sleeping at night for a month.

Doctor's answer:

Hello! The baby often experiences symptoms like runny nose, nasal congestion, and sneezing. This is because the nasal cavity is relatively narrow, the sinuses are not yet fully developed, and the nasal mucosa is particularly sensitive. The baby's nasal mucosa, like that of adults, produces a normal amount of secretions daily. When the secretions at the front accumulate for a long time, they dry out and harden into crusts, blocking the baby's narrow nasal cavity. With each breath, this causes a snoring-like nasal congestion sound in the little baby. Sometimes, when the baby sneezes, the crusts are pushed out of the nasal cavity, and the nasal congestion improves immediately. You can try cleaning the crusts with a warm wet cotton swab before bed (moisten the crusts with warm water, gently press both sides of the nostrils after 10 minutes, which will help the crusts come out, or you can also use a nasal aspirator), which will alleviate the nasal congestion.
If it is difficult to clean or the symptoms do not improve, you can go to the hospital for a checkup.
