[Preface] The Chinese nation possesses a long and splendid culture, among which acupuncture and moxibustion medicine is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine and one of the earliest medical methods discovered and applied by humans. Today, it has become one of the distinctive medical methods in the world. The enduring success of acupuncture and moxibustion lies in its effective clinical treatment outcomes. In addition to the clinical experiences recorded in various medical books over the centuries, most of the acupuncture and moxibustion works and literature published in the past half-century focus on introducing clinical experiences and insights. These works offer profound insights into acupuncture techniques and acupoint selection, inspiring and guiding learners, providing them with clear guidelines for future practice, and thus holding significant reference value. They are invaluable literature. However, it remains challenging to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the treatment of a specific condition from the vast amount of medical literature or to locate relevant materials, especially in the context of acupuncture and moxibustion education and the introduction of experiences to domestic and international audiences. To address this, with the support of the People's Medical Publishing House, we adopted an integrated approach of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, combined with personal clinical experiences, to collect and organize relevant literature, compile it into a book, and present it to readers. Below is an introduction to the compilation process of this book:
1. Most of the literature was sourced from acupuncture and moxibustion works published openly since the founding of the People's Republic of China, as well as major journals and magazines (over 300 in total) and materials from national and regional professional conferences in recent decades. From nearly 10,000 papers, we selected and summarized relevant content, making necessary deletions and corrections while respecting the original meaning. The sources of all data are clearly noted in the book.
2. The book aims to provide clinical treatment experiences in acupuncture and moxibustion. Therefore, the section on clinical treatment experiences accounts for more than 70% of the book. The selection of diseases is based on systematic observation of a large number of cases, with proven efficacy for common diseases, and a few selected for their lack of effective treatments but demonstrated benefits through acupuncture. A total of 80 diseases are covered. In terms of acupoint selection, we adopted a comprehensive approach, including both commonly used main and auxiliary points, as well as empirical and extraordinary points. For treatment techniques, we focused on widely practiced and effective methods, proposing general principles while respecting regional experiences to reflect actual conditions. Necessary supplements or explanations are provided after each acupuncture treatment experience.
3. Due to the strong authenticity and practicality of case reports and their reproducibility and safety in promotion, we included as many as possible. Most of the case reports collected are from difficult-to-treat clinical conditions. Even for relatively common diseases, we included them if their acupoint selection methods, acupuncture techniques, or syndrome differentiation approaches were unique and distinctive.
4. The title of this book, "Modern Acupuncture and Moxibustion Clinical Experiences," refers to treatment methods that, in addition to traditional acupuncture and moxibustion, also include electroacupuncture, auricular acupuncture, plum-blossom needle, finger acupuncture, acupoint injection, acupoint magnetotherapy, and acupoint laser therapy.
5. For materials that did not conform to our required style and format, the compilers made adjustments in text and format while preserving the original meaning to ensure coherence and ease of reading. The comments section primarily consists of analyses by the compilers based on the original drafts, including etiology, pathogenesis, syndrome differentiation, acupoint significance, technique experience, pathological mechanisms, and efficacy evaluation.
In summary, we adopted a pragmatic scientific attitude, adhered to the theory of syndrome differentiation and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine, and integrated Western medical knowledge to strive for rich, well-organized, and scientifically practical content.
