How to deal with a 7-year-old who still wets the bed

Patient's question:

Patient Gender: My son Zhi Fei is 7 years old this year and has developmental delays. Weight: 16 kg. So far, he cannot control nighttime urination, frequently wets the bed, and has shown no improvement despite multiple wake-up reminders. I don't know why? Looking forward to your reply!

Doctor's answer:

It is well known that bedwetting is a very common phenomenon in infants and young children. If a child is still unable to control urination during the day or wake up from sleep to urinate after the age of three, it is called primary enuresis. The exact cause of enuresis is still not completely clear, and it is believed to be related to the following factors:
(1) Genetic factors: Enuresis has a genetic tendency.
(2) Deep sleep: This is a relatively common factor. Children with this condition often play very tired before bed, sleep deeply, and are difficult to wake up. They also tend to wet the bed during dreams. If they drink a lot before bed, it is even more likely to occur.
(3) Delayed maturation of bladder function: Some children with enuresis have bladders that are smaller than normal. These children urinate more frequently on a daily basis, but each time they urinate only a small amount. This is because when there is little urine in the bladder, it contracts and urinates.
(4) Psychological stress
(5) Medical factors: Cases of enuresis caused by organic diseases are not very common. Urinary tract infections, abnormalities, and conditions such as spina bifida and meningocele can cause enuresis. Additionally, asymptomatic bacteriuria and hypercalciuria can also lead to enuresis and should be noted.
