Clearly, in terms of fame, La Dame aux Camélias is no less renowned than any classic masterpiece. Even in the French literary world, no one denies that La Dame aux Camélias was a stroke of luck—a resounding success. When the novel was published in 1848, it became a bestseller. Adapted into a play four years later, it was a resounding success. Alexandre Dumas fils was on the rise, becoming a favorite of the literary world. After that, he wrote and published many other novels and plays, some of which caused a sensation at the time. By the time his father, Alexandre Dumas père, passed away in 1870, Alexandre Dumas fils had completely overshadowed his father’s fame. He had a vast readership and audience, and in the eyes of many, he was the greatest writer of his time. In 1875, Alexandre Dumas fils was admitted to the Académie Fran?aise, achieving the pinnacle of his career and becoming one of the forty "Immortals." La Dame aux Camélias tells the love tragedy of a prostitute, drawing inspiration from the real-life story of a courtesan in Paris at the time. According to research, this courtesan was named Marie Duplessis. Due to poverty, she left her hometown for Paris at the age of fifteen. With her natural charm, she began frequenting the grand dance halls of Paris, becoming the object of pursuit by wealthy men and young nobles. She later relied on her beauty and body to lead a luxurious life. Eventually, she fell ill with tuberculosis from excessive drinking, revelry, and unrestrained sexual indulgence, and died from coughing up blood at the young age of twenty-three. The protagonist of the novel, Marguerite, was originally a poor country girl who came to Paris to earn a living. Unfortunatly, she fell into the world of prostitution and developed a habit of extravagance. She indulged in wild parties and pleasure-seeking to numb herself, but deep down, she despised this hollow life. This fallen woman, who still retained a pure heart, longed for true love. Later, she was moved by the sincere heart of Armand and fell deeply in love with him. They lived a happy pastoral life in the countryside, far from the bustling streets of Paris. Marguerite’s wounded heart began to heal, and she resolved to completely change her past ways and spend a normal, truly happy life with Armand. Unfortunately, the arrival of Armand’s father shattered her dreams. His hypocrisy and selfishness once again pushed Marguerite into disaster. Forced to leave Armand, she later suffered various insults and harms from him, who misunderstood the situation. Ultimately, she was overwhelmed by exhaustion and died of a broken heart.
