Features: In the two or three decades of the late 20th century, the field of condensed matter physics made several major and exciting discoveries and advancements. This not only deepened our understanding and comprehension of the physics of condensed matter but also significantly influenced the development of new theoretical methods and technologies, thereby promoting the advancement of new experimental methods and certain industrial production processes. We established this course primarily to introduce the physical content in this area, with most of the topics not yet included in our undergraduate curriculum. Professor Wang Xun wanted to offer this exciting content in condensed matter physics as a graduate-level course. We selected a portion of the material, many of which are Nobel Prize-winning topics. We find these physical contents truly brilliant and hope students will enjoy these highlights of condensed matter physics. In terms of selection, we avoided excessive mathematics and focused more on explaining the physical essence of these phenomena, hoping to provide a physical understanding of some renowned phenomena in condensed matter physics of the late 20th century. Due to our limited knowledge and capabilities, some quite important content was not included. During the writing process, some materials were adapted from original scientific papers or review articles, while others were sourced from content and images found on the World Wide Web (WWW). We are deeply grateful to the authors for allowing us to use their published work. There may inevitably be errors and shortcomings in this book, and we hope readers will provide criticism and corrections.
Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 were written by Peng Xiangyang, Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 were written by Ye Ling, and Chapter 5 was co-authored by Ye Ling and Hu Yanfang. Professor Wang Xun carefully reviewed the entire manuscript and made numerous revisions and additions. We would also like to thank Dr. Jeff Webb for reviewing the book and making valuable improvements in terms of language. We hope to dedicate this book to the centennial celebration of Fudan University, our alma mater.
