Analysis of dramatic music. Emphasis is placed on Part II, Analysis of tonal music. The analysis methods draw on traditional formalism, with adjustments and enrichments, and employ structural diagrams (for tonal music) and charts (for polyphonic music) to enhance visual teaching. The analysis targets primarily Western Baroque-Classical-Romantic period works and modern Chinese compositions, supplemented by vocal-instrumental suites and dramatic music by Western modern composers. Musical composition analysis is a relatively new discipline, having been introduced as a subject of study in the People's Republic of China. It has only a history of less than fifty years so far. Although the author of this book has participated in the teaching of this discipline at different times.
