How many days does newborn jaundice last?

Patient's question:

My baby was born 7 days ago and has slightly high jaundice. The doctor recommended blue light treatment and medication. She advised us to transfer to pediatrics. The jaundice levels were 14.4, 14.5, and 14.3. We are undecided, as she said that if untreated, it may lead to a recurrence of meningitis. The baby is in good spirits and doing well in all aspects.
Previous treatment and outcomes: Took medication for jaundice for two days, but experienced frequent bowel movements and a small anal fissure.
Kind of help needed: What should we do.

Doctor's answer:

Neonatal jaundice is divided into physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice. Physiological jaundice can subside within half a month to 20 days. The duration of pathological jaundice is difficult to say, as it depends on the cause of the jaundice and whether timely treatment is administered. For your child's condition, you can take jaundice-reducing medication, encourage more fluid intake to enhance metabolism, and first wait and see. Monitor the jaundice index frequently. If the jaundice index continues to decline, hospitalization treatment may be necessary.
