1-month-old baby's yellow-green stool is normal

Patient's question:

My baby is one month old, and we are doing a mixed feeding with breastfeeding as the main method. We use Similac Gold for the formula. The baby weighed 6.9 pounds at birth and now weighs 9.1 pounds. The baby is in great spirits and often keeps their big eyes open, refusing to sleep. During the day, they need to be held to sleep, and once they fall asleep, they cry after being put down for just 5 minutes. At night, the baby often hums and needs to be comforted to fall asleep. This way, the baby gets around 10 hours of sleep in total each day. The baby's bowel movements also vary in frequency and amount. Sometimes they have 3-4 bowel movements a day, but each time not much is passed. Other times, they only have 1-2 bowel movements every 1-2 days, but when they do, it's a lot. The stool is yellow or green and has a paste-like consistency. Is all of this normal?

Doctor's answer:

Hello! A baby's daily sleep time should be around 16-20 hours. If the baby often sleeps restlessly, it's important to consider whether there is a hunger issue. Additionally, factors like the warmth or coolness of the bedding, and whether the sleeping environment is suitable, also play a significant role.
Generally, one month after birth, you can start adding fish oil to the baby's diet. It can correct and prevent symptoms caused by a lack of vitamin D, such as night sweats, sleeplessness, bald spots on the head, and poor appetite.
If breast milk is insufficient, it should be supplemented with formula. If the baby drinks more milk, their stools may appear looser and more frequent. Conversely, if they drink less, their stools will be drier and less frequent. The color of the stools is normal.
