What to do if you only have one testicle

Patient's question:

Only one testicle is present in the scrotum, secondary sexual characteristics are normal, there is no discomfort in the body, and another testicle can be felt in the abdomen, which is relatively small. What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

Analysis of the condition: Undescended testes refer to a condition where one or both testes of a male infant do not descend into the scrotum but remain at any point in their normal descent process. In other words, there are no testes in the scrotum, or only one testis is present in the scrotum. Most patients do not exhibit symptoms.
Recommendations: For undescended testes in adolescents, it is essential to perform orchiopexy (surgical descent and fixation of the testes) as soon as they are detected. If the testis is found to be atrophic or unable to descend into the scrotum during surgery, orchiectomy (testicular removal) may be necessary.
Should surgical treatment also be considered for unilateral undescended testes? In the past, it was believed that the testis already settled in the scrotum of unilateral undescended testes patients had normal spermatogenic function and would not affect fertility.
