Is the child's back of the head severely bruised?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor! My son is 4 and a half years old. About half a month ago, while walking on the bed, he accidentally fell down and hit the edge of the wardrobe right below the bed. He hit the left side of his head, leaving a very red mark and a slight swelling at the time. Now, the mark seems not to have completely disappeared, and when I carefully touch it, I notice a small bump (like a mosquito bite). I’m wondering if this situation is serious?

Doctor's answer:

A concussion refers to a temporary brain dysfunction that occurs immediately after the head is struck by external force. The pathological changes are not significant, and the mechanism of occurrence is still a subject of debate. Clinical manifestations include transient loss of consciousness, retrograde amnesia, as well as symptoms such as headache, nausea, and vomiting. Neurological examinations reveal no positive findings, and there are generally no long-term sequelae. Treatment typically involves rest, appropriate energy supplementation, and increased fluid intake.
