Is it good for babies to sleep on their side?

Patient's question:

My baby is a premature child, and I was very worried about the child's condition from the beginning. Recently, the child has appeared with this series of conditions, and I am also very worried, afraid that the child will become worse. Is it good for babies to sleep on their side?

Doctor's answer:

The sleeping positions of babies are similar to those of adults, including supine, prone, and lateral positions, among others. From a medical perspective, lateral sleeping is most beneficial for a baby's physical and mental health. Lateral sleeping best meets the physiological needs of the human body. When a baby sleeps on their side, the spine is slightly curved, the shoulders are slightly forward, the legs are bent, and the arms are free. The muscles of the entire body are in a state of maximum commitment to relaxation, allowing the baby to fall asleep peacefully. If the baby sleeps on their right side, it is even more reasonable.
For babies whose digestive functions are not yet fully developed and who are prone to reflux after feeding, lateral sleeping can prevent vomit from refluxing into the respiratory tract and causing suffocation. When a baby sleeps on their right side, their heart is not compressed, and the liver in the upper right abdomen also receives a sufficient blood supply. At the same time, this right-side lateral sleeping position can also help move the food in the baby's stomach toward the duodenum, allowing the digestive function to work fully.
