Features: Few institutions with significant global influence can find a home that truly suits them. This possibility is extremely slim. The higher an organization's prestige, the greater the pressure it faces to please everyone. Out of fear of showcasing too much individuality, it often results in bulky and rigid buildings, which is somewhat expected. Ironically, it rarely pleases anyone. As an international institution supporting the economic growth of developing countries, the headquarters of the World Bank in Washington, D.C., undeniably turns this possibility into reality. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in collaboration with its renowned partners, the building meets the owner's expectations in several aspects: achieving various large-scale, dynamic, and high-quality workspace layouts within limited space; presenting a noble image to the world without being bulky, rigid, or excessively luxurious materials; and adapting to the architectural style of the Washington area while maintaining design consistency. When too many newly constructed buildings in the city are forced to adhere to conventional norms, the creative and internationally-oriented design of the World Bank building is truly inspiring. This book explores the small and large design and engineering ideas that make the building so outstanding. For all those aspiring to perfect design, this should be a very worthwhile exploration. John Morris Dixon, FAIA, of Old Greenwich, Connecticut, served as the editor-in-chief of "Architecture in Progress" from 1972 to 1995 and has spent a significant career in architectural publishing. He has written numerous articles for other publications, published several books on architecture, and currently serves as the associate editor of the "Quarterly Review of Architecture," published by Cambridge, UK.
